Overview

Sustainability for Co-op means reducing environmental impacts, investing in local communities and operating in a financially responsible manner. This will be accomplished by seeking solutions that promote efficiency, innovation and collaboration – including strategy development guided by stakeholders – and can be used across Western Canada.

Environmental Sustainability

We care about our communities and the environment we share. Care for the Environment is one of our brand pillars, and part of what makes Co-op a different kind of business. Under that umbrella, we focus on making positive change in three key areas: circular economy, climate transition and responsible sourcing. As a result of our stewardship, we continue to offer key initiatives within these areas, such as Grown With Purpose, Sustainable Seafood Policy and reducing the amount of food waste that goes to landfills through Loop Food Rescue.

Social Responsibility

We care about supporting initiatives that engage employees and give back to the communities where we live and work. FCL’s philanthropic focus includes employee-directed giving, strategic community partnerships and important programs in our communities. These initiatives include our Community Investment Fund, Co-op Community Spaces capital funding program, long-term partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, and more. FCL also advocates for the co-operative model through funding for research and development initiatives.

Remediation

We are deeply committed to the safe and sustainable management of both current and former operational sites across the CRS. At FCL, we continually seek better ways to address these challenges and proudly support innovative research focused on the safe remediation of historic fuel and fertilizer locations. In addition to conducting our own research, we collaborate closely with government, industry partners, and academia to advance environmental knowledge for the betterment of local Co-ops, member-owners, and the communities across Western Canada where we live, work, and play.
