Notice of flaring north of Estevan

August 3, 2017

UPDATED (Aug. 4, 2017): Flaring to begin at 10 a.m. (previously 8 a.m.) and may last as long as 60 hours.

On Thursday, a third-party carrier inadvertently offloaded anhydrous ammonia into propane storage tanks at the Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) bulk propane plant near Estevan, Sask.

The situation is currently stable and both pressurized liquids and associated vapours are fully contained with no release to the environment. There have been no customers affected and there have been no injuries associated with this incident.  FCL is working with local and provincial authorities, including the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, RCMP, Estevan Fire Department and Rural Municipality of Estevan to resolve this situation.

As part of an emergency response plan, a team will empty the tank by flaring, which is scheduled to begin as early as 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, and could last as long as 60 hours. A fire truck will be standing by on site throughout the flaring.

Nearby residents are being notified of the situation and will be kept informed of the situation for their safety.

The propane branch is located six kilometres north of Estevan on Highway 47.
