Prize scam targeting Co-op customers

May 19, 2016

A number of Co-op customers have recently been contacted by a person informing them they are a cash or prize winner. The person is claiming to be employed by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL).

FCL and local retail co-operatives offer many contests throughout the year and contact prize winners by telephone. However, these recent occurrences are not connected with our business.

According to the RCMP, a prize pitch is a classic scam. They recommend:

  • keeping track of contests, draws and lotteries you enter;
  • challenging a caller and asking them to tell you where and when you entered; and
  • knowing there are no prize fees or taxes in Canada.

Customers are encouraged to contact FCL at inquiries@fcl.ca call (306) 244-3311 for confirmation about winning a prize or if they are suspicious about any phone calls. If a scam is suspected, customers should report all instances to their local police service.
