Cornish Flakes: A new breakfast tradition

May 24, 2014

It’ll soon be crunch time for Calgary Stampeders fans who can buy Cornish Flakes cereal, featuring running back Jon Cornish, at Co-op locations in Calgary and across southern Alberta.

Cornish autographed boxes of the new cereal at the Stampeders Fanfest in McMahon Stadium today to launch the Co-op/Stampeders Game Day Approved product line. Through the new collaboration between Co-op and the Stampeders, a portion of sales from 15 co-branded, specially labeled food and general merchandise items is donated to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.“This is a big win for everyone. Not only are football fans and Co-op shoppers buying quality products and showing their team pride, they’re also contributing to a healthier future for our children and families because of their purchases of Game Day Approved products,” said Ken Woo, CEO, Calgary Co-op, on behalf of Co-ops across southern Alberta.

Other products joining Cornish’s cereal and his RB-Q Chips on the Co-op/ Stampeders Game Day Approved 2014 roster are two water products, sunflower seeds, bag of ice, chocolate bar, sliced bread, hamburger buns, peanuts in shell, trail mix, reusable party cups, picnic cooler and collector’s edition football.

“We’re very excited about this collaboration with Co-op stores,” said Stampeders President Gordon Norrie. “This is a fun—and tasty—way for Stampeders fans to show their pride in the Red and White. It’s especially satisfying to know that this will result in the raising of funds for such a wonderful organization as the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.”

The Co-op/Stampeders collaboration is similar to the one between Co-op and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Co-op/Roughriders collaboration raised $95,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan in the 2013 season. A total of $416,000 has been raised since the collaboration began in 2010. Money raised in support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Co-op/Stampeders Game Day Approved collaboration is in addition to Co-op’s $825,000 gift over five years to the Foundation announced last year.

“We think it’s wonderful that Co-op is going the extra ‘yard’ with this friendly competition,” said Safia Koonar, President and CEO of the Alberta’s Children’s Hospital Foundation. “We’re grateful to both them and the Calgary Stampeders for coming up with such a fun way to support kids and families across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.”

Earlier this week, Co-op announced that it was expanding its collaboration with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, featuring Chris Getzlaff and Darian Durant, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, featuring Nick Moore. Co-op also announced a new collaboration with the Edmonton Eskimos, featuring Mike Reilly.
